Does My Child Need a Frenectomy?

Posted on 3/9/2015 by William Moore
Does your baby boy need a frenectomy? Some kids are born with a frenum that causes difficulty with the function of their mouth. The frenum is a simple piece of muscle that holds two tissues together in the mouth. If the frenum is too restrictive, it can cause difficulty with normal operation of the mouth and can even make some children tongue tied. At St. Helen's Pediatric Dentistry, we offer a simple procedure to correct this problem called a frenectomy.

Reasons for a Frenectomy

If the frenum is causing too much restriction in the mouth it can be removed with no recourse, since it has no real purpose in the mouth. A few of the most common reasons for the removal include:

• Difficulty moving the tongue freely in the mouth
• Restriction of the growth of the permanent upper teeth

What to Expect

Dr. Moore can perform the frenectomy in our office. Depending on the age of your child, and the placement of the frenum, we may recommend your child be mildly sedated to avoid sudden movement during the procedure. The entire process can be completed in under 30 minutes, and your child will have freedom of movement again.
