Dental Crowns for Kids |
A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface after removing any decay present. A crown protects and strengthens your child's tooth, giving the tooth a longer life than it would have if restored by fillings or other types of restorations.
For your child's tooth, we will use a stainless steel crown. Stainless steel crowns, commonly referred to as SSC, are made of pure metal, and are soft enough to mold to your child's tooth, yet protect it from further damage and decay. Stainless steel crowns also require much less tooth structure to be removed, as opposed to porcelain or porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns.
Dental crowns for kids are rarely made from porcelain materials, although that is available. Because we often treat primary (baby) teeth with crowns, we do not recommend using porcelain for a tooth that will eventually exfoliate (fall out), due to both the cost to you and the amount of tooth that needs to be removed for a porcelain crown. |
